ORAL HEAD AND NECK PATHOLOGY & CANCER SCREENINGS
The amount of pathology that can occur in the mouth is astonishing. The mouth is the gateway into the body and we strongly believe that EVERY patient gets an Oral Head and Neck Pathology & Cancer Screening at each of their examination appointments. Every examination at Healing Tooth will start with an Oral Head and Neck Cancer & Pathology screening. According to the American Cancer Society, the lifetime risk of developing oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer is about 1 in 59 for men and 1 in 139 for women. Pathological conditions in the mouth can be malignant, benign but locally invasive, or benign in nature. Thus, it is important to catch pathological conditions as early as possible. Early detection is key. Schedule now for your Oral Head and Neck Pathology and Cancer screening at Healing Tooth, Austin, Texas 78752. A dental office near you.
DENTAL CLEANINGS AND DENTAL DISINFECTIONS & TREATMENT
CONDITIONS OF THE PERIODONTIUM: There are seven different “cleanings” that a dentist prescribed once the conditions of the mouth are evaluated: debridement, prophylaxis, gingival therapy, deep cleaning of 1-3 teeth per quadrant, deep cleaning of 4-6 teeth per quadrant, open flap debridement, and periodontal maintenance. With the advancements of medical research and clinical proficiencies, your dental team may recommend laser treatment, local application of antibiotics, prescription mouth rinse, or other OTC product recommendations. The normal dental cleaning is called a dental prophylaxis, often referred to as a “prophy”. Prophylaxis stems from the Greek word, phylax, meaning to preserve health or prevent the spread of disease. Healthy gums? No problem. This professional cleaning is performed in the absence of disease by a dental hygienist or dentist. The goal is to prevent tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. However, in the presence of disease, our responsibility as your oral health ambassador is to have a proper diagnosis of your gingival health in order to prescribe the correct treatment. These are non-negotiable standards in dentistry. Anything beyond a dental prophylaxis is no longer considered a “cleaning” at Healing Tooth. In the presence of disease, “treatment” is recommended. Problem: Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums. It can cause redness, soreness, bleeding, and swelling of the gums. Treatment: Gingival Therapy which is scaling in the presence of generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation. This therapeutic service removes dental biofilm (plaque and calculus) to promote tissue healing. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend laser bacterial reduction depending on the amount of bleeding during the treatment. Problem: Periodontal disease is the inflammation or infection of the periodontium – which includes the tissue that supports the teeth leading to bone loss. Periodontal tissue includes the gums, the tissue that holds the teeth in place (ligaments), and the tooth socket (alveolar bone). The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions resulted in a new classification of periodontitis characterized by a multidimensional staging and grading system. This standard has been adopted by the American Academy of Periodontology and is within our Standard of Dental Health Agreement at Healing Tooth. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial disease process which includes bacteria, occlusion, and ability to maintain proper at-home oral hygiene. Periodontal disease and severe gingivitis act as a harbor for harmful bacteria. Your natural oral flora evolves into a harmful environment. This has far greater implications other than infections in your oral cavity. When the periodontal bacteria enter your bloodstream (bacteremia), it has lasting effects on your systemic health. Periodontal disease has been heavily studied and reviewed to have a link to various system health conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment: The gold standard of treating periodontal disease is scaling and root planing; commonly referred to as a “deep cleaning”. Periodontal disease is classified as a chronic disease. Thus, a patient with periodontitis will get their “cleanings” also known as Periodontal Maintenance disinfection once every 3-4 months depending on severity. Once again, “cleanings” is a misnomer as there is active treatment of the conditions found in the mouth. The bacteria that worsen periodontal conditions evolve over time. There are approximately 15 early colonizing bacteria and 12 middle colonizing bacteria; these are different bacteria than those that cause dental decay. It is, however, the RED COMPLEX of bacteria that is most harmful to the periodontium: P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, and T. denticola. These bacteria thrive in the absence of oxygen and each have unique characteristics and shapes. While the bacteria can be transmitted, it doesn’t automatically mean that the recipient will develop periodontal disease. Factors like genetic predisposition, oral hygiene habits, and overall health also play an essential role. CONDITIONS OF THE TEETH
Healing Tooth provides a comprehensive examination of your teeth so you can have a healthier and brighter smile. Teeth are susceptible to damage from trauma, the bite, and bacteria interacting with the food we consume. Dental caries is a prevalent, transmissible, chronic infectious disease resulting from tooth-adherent cariogenic bacteria that metabolize sugars to produce acid, which, over time, demineralizes tooth structure. The bad guy - Streptococcus mutans. This bacteria interacts with food debris and sugars in the mouth to form acid which breaks down healthy tooth structure. The damage from bacteria leaves a hole; thus, a cavitation or cavity is a result from dental caries. The tooth has normal grooves, pits, and fissures. Some teeth are formed with deeper grooves than others. These deeper grooves are more difficult to clean and become a food trap allowing bacteria to thrive. Sealants, Preventive Resin Restorations, Dental Restorations or Fillings, Dental Crowns, or Silver Diamine Fluoride may be recommended depending on the extent of damage. The diet also plays a crucial role in your oral health. Did you know that early hunter-gatherers had little-to-no cavities? It was from the introduction of carbohydrates, grains, and sugars that allowed harmful bacteria to thrive in our mouths. Reducing consumption of sugars and avoiding acidic foods help in the reduction of dental cavities. Remineralization Properties of Fluoride or 10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite: The benefits of fluoride were established in the early 1900s. The enamel is the strongest substance our body makes and is the outer protective layer of our teeth. Ameloblasts are the cells responsible of laying down enamel during tooth formation. During amelogenesis, the formation of enamel, half of the ameloblasts are lost. Furthermore, upon tooth eruption, the other half of the ameloblast are lost. Thus, our enamel has no reparative function. Fluoride has multiple benefits. It remineralizes your tooth enamel in addition to reversing early incipient tooth decay. It slows down the process of demineralization and slows the growth of cavity-causing (cariogenic) bacteria. If you are at high risk of developing dental caries, a prescription toothpaste is recommended. Healing Tooth is the name of our practice as it is our goal to preserve the natural tooth as long as possible. Whether its promoting healing of an infection by performing a root canal or building a tooth back up with a esthetic dental crown, we strive to go the natural route whenever possible. However, if a tooth needs to be extracted, it is our recommendation to replace it due to the changes that will occur in your occlusion. Missing teeth will result in other teeth drifting towards the midline or teeth supra-erupting. A change in the bite could lead to periodontal involvement. Additionally, the bite may begin to collapse, loss of vertical dimension, leading to jaw pain or temporomandibular joint disorder. Replacements for missing teeth including dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Dental Implants are considered to act most like a natural tooth. They are made of mainly three different parts: the dental implant, abutment, and dental crown. The dental implant is the surgical screw made of titanium that acts not unlike the root of a tooth. The abutment is either made of high noble metals, titanium, or porcelain which acts as the foundational structure to support the dental crown. OCCLUSION AND HARMONY
Orthodontics is the process of moving teeth into a more favorable position for both function and esthetics. A harmonious bite is one of the most important aspects towards a healthier smile. Correcting the bite allows for even distribution of forces, reduces the risk of developing cracks and fractures, and reduces forces that may lead to gingival inflammatory response. Additionally, straight teeth are clean teeth and allow for improved at-home oral hygiene care. This can improve the oral health by reducing the risk of developing interproximal caries (decay in between the teeth) and periodontal disease. We partner with Invisalign and the American Academy of Clear Aligners to bring you a healthier and straighter smile.
